Adult Orthodontics

Adult Orthodontics

Straight teeth have become a standard for professionals; it is expected that adults have straight teeth in a work environment. But not all adults had access to orthodontics as children or developed dental problems in their adult years. Now, it seems too late to fix the problems, braces are even worse than crooked teeth for some adults.

This doesn’t have to be the case though. We offer both traditional braces for kids as well as braces for adults so it is never too late to start orthodontic treatment. An orthodontic problem left unsolved will many times get worse over time. Also, if these problems do become more serious, then they can result in more future costs for your dental care. Adult orthodontics can help:

  • aesthetics
  • make it easier to maintain and clean teeth
  • reduce tooth decay, gum disease, and bone loss
  • prevent joint pain (TMJ problems) or muscular pain (myofascial pain)

Fortunately, braces are more aesthetically pleasing for adults today than they were years ago when there were large metal braces or metal bands on every single tooth. The metal braces of today are much smaller. Even better is today adults have more options than the traditional metal braces.

There is also the option to have  “clear braces” which are braces made of ceramic in conjunction with white-coated wires. Another alternative to traditional braces are laboratory-fabricated clear aligners or Invisalign are also available to the adult patient. This process uses a succession of clear aligners to straighten adult teeth. The Invisalign is a  perfectly clear and removable option for both adults and children.

Unfortunately, treatment is often more complex for adults due to existing restoration (e.g. crowns), compromised periodontal conditions, and medical conditions. Also, because adult patients’ facial bones are finished growing, then orthognathic surgery (orthodontics with facial surgery) may be needed to correct skeletal problems.

Due to the complexity of adult orthodontics, it is best to have treatment with an orthodontist who is a specialist with additional training beyond dental school. After four years at an ADA accredited dental school, an orthodontist must go for an additional 2 to 3 years of orthodontic training. Dr. James Riesenberger is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), the American Dental Association (ADA), the Mid-Atlantic Society of Orthodontics (MASO), and the Pennsylvania Dental Association (PDA). Dr. Riesenberger was a top 100, premier provider of Invisalign, and is also an exclusive provider of Incognito – Lingual Braces/hidden braces.

Invisalign & Incognito

Dr. Riesenberger is a premium provider of Invisalign and was previously on the Century Club “Top 100 Providers” in the nation. Invisalign is thought of as a newer technology, but it has actually been around for over 15 years, long enough to be considered a proven technology with over three million people treated worldwide. Invisalign technology uses 3-D computer generated imaging to help create the clear aligners for each individual patient. It is a very precise process where Align Technology and Dr. Riesenberger work together to help properly align teeth. Invisalign are clear aligners that have minimal impact on your daily life and are easy and comfortable to wear. Because they are clear aligners, there is no need for braces, bands or wires. It is an ideal alternative for those patients (adults or teens) who want to straighten their teeth without the look of braces. There are a number of advantages of Invisalign in relation to braces:

  • less noticeable
  • removable which allows for better oral hygiene
  • more comfortable due to no bands, braces, or wires.
